It should be noted that dyslexia tends to run in families, so there may be a history of it. Asking parents however may not be enough, as often a parent will not have recognised it when he\/she was at school. Many only realise the condition once their children are&nbsp;diagnosed.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-352\" src=\"https:\/\/alcv.com.au\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CommonSigns-11.png\" alt=\"Jumbled letters\" width=\"255\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<h2>Before School<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>History of slow speech development.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty learning nursery rhymes.<\/li>\n<li>Finds phonological difficulty with the selection of the odd one out e.g. cat: pig : fat.<\/li>\n<li>Slow in name finding.<\/li>\n<li>Some dyslexic children enjoy being read to, but show no<br \/>\ninterest in letters or words. Others have no patience for sitting and listening.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with two or more instructions at one time (due to weak memory system) but well able to carry out tasks when presented in smaller units.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty keeping simple rhythm.<\/li>\n<li>May not crawl but walks early.<\/li>\n<li>Persistent difficulty in dressing.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with shoe laces, buttons, clothes the right way around.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with catching, kicking or throwing a ball.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with hopping and skipping.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive tripping, bumping into things and falling over&nbsp;things.<\/li>\n<li>Obvious good and bad days for no apparent reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>At Primary School<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal organisation poor.<\/li>\n<li>Poor time keeping and awareness.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in remembering what day of the week it is, birth date,<br \/>\nseasons of the year, month of the year.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in learning to tell the time.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty remembering anything in sequential order, e.g. days of the week, the<br \/>\nalphabet, tables, foreign languages.<\/li>\n<li>Poor reading progress, particularly on look-and-say methods. Inability to blend letters together.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in establishing syllable division, beginnings and endings of words synthesis and analysis of words.<\/li>\n<li>Hesitant and laboured reading, especially when reading aloud, often misses out words or adds extra words or fails to recognise familiar words.<\/li>\n<li>Making anagrams of words, e.g. tired for tried, breaded for bearded.<\/li>\n<li>Undetermined hand preference.<\/li>\n<li>Confusion between left and right.<\/li>\n<li>Poor handwriting with many reversals and badly formed letters.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in picking out the most important points from a passage.<\/li>\n<li>Poor standard of written work in comparison with oral ability.<\/li>\n<li>Losing the point of the story being written or read. Messy work with many crossings out and words tried several times e.g. wippe, wype, wiep, wipe.<\/li>\n<li>Persistent confusion with letters which look similar, particularly b\/d, p\/q, n\/u, m\/w.<\/li>\n<li>Confusion with number order, e.g. plus and minus. A word spelt several different ways in one piece of writing. Badly set out written work, inability to stay close to the margin.<\/li>\n<li>Seems to dream, does not seem to listen.<\/li>\n<li>Easily distracted.<\/li>\n<li>Limited understanding of non-verbal communication.<\/li>\n<li>Fine motor skills may be poor leading to weakness in the speed, control and accuracy of the pencil.<\/li>\n<li>May become the class clown, disruptive or withdrawn<br \/>\n(these are cries for help).<\/li>\n<li>Employs work avoidance tactics (sharpening pencils, looking for books etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Rests head on desk or right over to one side when colouring or&nbsp;writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alcv.com.au\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CommonSigns-2.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-172\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-172 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/alcv.com.au\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CommonSigns-2-300x282.png\" alt=\"ABC Blocks\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Performs unevenly day to day.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive tiredness due to the amount of concentration and effort<br \/>\nrequired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the symptoms of Dyslexia Not every sign or symptom of the dyslexic profile presents itself in each dyslexic person, although there is usually evidence of a sufficient cluster of these to lead to a diagnosis.
